…the Beast had finally been conquered. This remarkable accomplishment represented the pinnacle of seven years filled with unwavering determination, setbacks, adjustments, and ultimate victories.

My adventure toward mastering the Beast kicked off in April 2017, shortly following my inaugural StrongFirst kettlebell workshop in Mexico City. The session was expertly guided by StrongFirst Certified Senior Instructor Yoana Teran, and from the instant I entered the room, I sensed that a profound transformation in my life was underway. Upon exploring StrongFirst’s online community discussions, I came across a challenge that immediately seized my attention: the Beast Tamer Challenge. The requirements involved executing a strict press, a pistol squat, and a strict weighted pull-up, all with a formidable 48kg kettlebell. Prior to that, I had never laid eyes on a 48kg kettlebell, much less imagined hoisting it overhead. Nevertheless, in that moment, I resolved to pursue taming the Beast as my primary objective.

Initially, I lacked any clear strategy for harmonizing the three essential movements. My workouts were a haphazard blend of intense all-out efforts, cross-training routines, martial arts practices, hybrid exercises, and various other approaches I believed might contribute to my progress. Amid this disorganized regimen, I managed to advance my strict press to 32kg, achieve a pistol squat with 24kg, and build my weighted pull-up capacity to 20kg. In September 2018, I participated in my first SFG I StrongFirst Kettlebell Instructor Certification under the direction of StrongFirst Certified Master Instructor Fabio Zonin, where I confronted the Beast head-on for the initial time. I gave it my all to press the weight, but it refused to yield—not even slightly. This humbling encounter fueled my inner vow to come back far more capable.

That pivotal experience ignited the true commencement of my dedicated path forward. I became driven to adopt a more intelligent training methodology. Yoana shared with me a straightforward pressing template, which I customized to encompass all three lifts. The structure revolved around identifying a five-rep maximum (5RM), structured as follows:

  • Week 1: 2/2 performed twice weekly
  • Week 2: 3/3 performed twice weekly
  • Week 3: 4/4 performed twice weekly
  • Week 4: 5/5 performed twice weekly
  • Week 5: TEST

Although I saw some gains—reaching a 40kg press, a 36kg pistol squat, and 28kg weighted pull-ups—I soon encountered another impasse. My body began to feel rigid, and my recovery capacity diminished noticeably. The younger version of myself persisted in forcing through the fatigue, both mentally and physically, until I wisely chose to pause, recover fully, and reevaluate my approach.

During 2019, I undertook my debut official attempt to tame the Beast under the supervision of StrongFirst Certified Master Instructor Karen Smith. The movements proved demanding enough, but an additional layer of difficulty arose from my unfamiliarity with the required commands. In my personal practice sessions, I would seamlessly transition from cleaning the kettlebell directly into the press. Thus, when I cleaned the Beast during the test, I had to await the instructor's cue before pressing, resisting my natural urge to rush. Overwhelmed by nerves, both of my press attempts fell short.

Following this unsuccessful bid, I overhauled my preparation strategy. I recognized the necessity of training explicitly for the challenge's protocols, including deliberate pauses after the clean for the press, in the hanging position for the pull-up, and at the completion of the pistol squat. Moreover, I acknowledged that my habit of blending multiple training paradigms was introducing counterproductive exercises that were genuinely hindering my advancement. Consequently, I shifted my focus to the essentials:

  • Eliminating all activities unrelated to the core objective.
  • Ceasing the combination of diverse training methodologies.
  • Committing to a sustained, consistent long-term program.
  • Prioritizing fatigue avoidance, always reserving additional reps in reserve.
  • Honoring designated rest intervals, both within workouts and between training sessions.

The year 2020 brought fresh hurdles, primarily due to the onset of the COVID pandemic, which demanded significant adaptations. Yet, a silver lining emerged: I gained extra time to concentrate on a singular, refined training methodology known as Plan Strong. Armed with fresh perspectives, I refined my programming. By year's end, my weighted pull-up had climbed to 40kg, my pistol squat felt rock-solid at 48kg, though my press lingered stubbornly at 44kg.

Entering 2021, I felt prepared to tackle the Beast Tamer challenge once more at the SFG Level I Certification led by Master Fabio Zonin. On this occasion, I triumphed with the press and pistol squat, but the pull-up remained just out of reach. Victory tantalized me, so near yet elusive. This near-miss illuminated the need for a total reconstruction of my pull-up training regimen—I had to rebuild from the foundation.

Under the mentorship of Masters Fabio and Brett, I implemented one of Pavel’s innovative experimental protocols. This was a six-week step-loading cycle utilizing a 5-6RM load. It commenced with doubles, advanced to triples, and then escalated to fives. I rigorously determined my 5-6RM and adhered scrupulously to StrongFirst's stop signs. Patience and consistency defined my execution. I cycled through the identical plan four times, placing full faith in its design. The outcomes were transformative: my tactical pull-up 5RM surged from 20kg to 32kg, and my one-rep maximum leaped from 40kg to a triumphant 48kg. Additionally, my back developed greater width and resilience.

This stands as the most effective pull-up program I have ever followed.

At last, the climactic moment arrived—the definitive chance to subdue the Beast in the presence of those who had witnessed my journey from the outset, including the individuals who had observed my prior defeats: Masters Karen and Fabio, along with Senior Yoana.

I approached the platform brimming with assurance, determined to demonstrate my readiness. The pull-up came first, and after enduring years of frustrations, I nailed it flawlessly. The pistol squat followed seamlessly, and capping it off was the press, sealing the deal. With that, the Beast was decisively tamed—a testament to seven years of steadfast perseverance, learning from failures, strategic adaptations, and hard-won triumphs.

This milestone would not have been attainable without the invaluable guidance and encouragement from numerous key figures: Yoana Teran, who first welcomed me into the StrongFirst world; Fabio Zonin, who assisted in crafting my training blueprints; Karen Smith, who oversaw my Beast Tamer evaluations; my training peers and partners; and my family and loved ones, who provided unwavering support throughout.

Celebrating successful Beast Tamer challenge completion

Conquering the Beast transcended mere physical prowess; it embodied an unyielding quest for strength, self-discipline, and acquired knowledge. For any aspiration you hold, cultivating mental sharpness and enduring perseverance are the cornerstones of success. When circumstances grow overwhelmingly complex, the mind risks wavering—prevent that at all costs! Maintain laser focus on your objective, and hold fast to this truth: we embody StrongFirst, never settling for second place.
